HUTCHINSON CENTER IN BELFAST OPENS NATIONAL LITERACY MONTH WITH EXHIBIT AT FERNALD ART GALLERY: LITERACY VOLUNTEERS OF WALDO COUNTY HOSTS RECEPTION SEPTEMBER 14.

Portland ME – “The courageous men and women portrayed in these photographs have achieved literacy skills and met personal goals through their dedicated work with Literacy Volunteers. They inspire others with low literacy or limited English-speaking background to accomplish similar life-changing results.” So affirms Patrick Walsh, coordinator of Literacy Volunteers of Waldo County, about the significance of the FACES OF LITERACY: VOICES OF COURAGE exhibition.

LV Waldo County, a program of Broadreach Family & Community Services in cooperation with the University of Maine – Hutchinson Center in Belfast, will host the exhibit September 8 to December 17, 2010 at the Center’s H. Allen & Sally Fernald Art Gallery. Viewing hours will be weekdays 8:00 am to 9:00 pm Monday through Friday; 8:00 am to 3 pm Saturdays. The public is invited to attend an opening reception with light refreshments Tuesday, September 14, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm in The Atrium, adjacent to the Gallery. Individuals interested in LV Waldo’s fall training program to be volunteer tutors are encouraged to attend the reception.

September is National Literacy Month. Dr. C. Sue McCullough, Director of the Hutchinson Center, comments, “This collection of remarkable photographs and stories presents a wonderful opportunity to let our community know more about the important work of Maine’s Literacy Volunteers.”

The exhibit, which is part of an outreach campaign organized by Literacy Volunteers of Maine (LV Maine), has toured five Maine regions since its statewide premiere at the Saco Museum in October 2009. 20 large format, black-and-white portraits document 41 adults from across the state who came together in the Maine Literacy Volunteers Network. Small business owners, new Americans, students, health care workers, truck drivers, retired librarians, scientists and political asylees are portrayed, along with their dramatic personal testimonials. Photographers Ashley Earl, Melissa DiPaola, Emma Sampson, Jeffrey Fujiu, Jessica Perro and Diane Wren collaborated on the project pro bono under the direction of LV Maine.

Established in 1986, Literacy Volunteers of Waldo County delivers literacy instruction to adults with a dedicated corps of trained tutors. Walsh adds, “If you want to read or write better, we are here to help with confidential literacy services. Whether you have a short-term goal of getting your driver’s license, or a long-term plan to complete your GED, we can tailor a program for you. We also always need volunteer tutors to
help people improve their literacy and achieve their goals.”

LV Waldo’s next tutor training session begins September 22 in Belfast. To sign up for the tutor training, or learn more about the FACES OF LITERACY: VOICES OF COURAGE reception, call Patrick Walsh at 338-2200 extension 109.

Broadreach Receives Grant

Filed under: Uncategorized — Nina @ 3:55 pm

Broadreach Family & Community Services has received a grant from the Maine Children’s Trust, the statewide child abuse and neglect prevention organization, to help  improve the well-being of children in Midcoast Maine by providing Active Parenting Now classes in the Belfast and Rockland areas. This new curriculum offers 6 two-hour sessions and has been shown to improve parents’ confidence and ability.

The National Register of Evidence-based Programs and Practices describes the program in this way “Active Parenting Now is a video-based education program targeted to parents of 2- to 12-year-olds who want to improve their parenting skills. It is based on the application of Adlerian parenting theory, which is defined by mutual respect among family members within a democratically run family. The program teaches parents how to raise a child by using encouragement, building the child’s self-esteem, and creating a relationship with the child based upon active listening, honest communication, and problem solving. It also teaches parents to use natural and logical consequences to reduce irresponsible and unacceptable behaviors.”

These parent classes will be open to all parents and child care will be provided during class. A calendar of classes and locations is being developed and more information will be available shortly.

Broadreach provides a variety of services to young parents and their children in Waldo and Knox Counties. Broadreach services have been making a critical difference in the lives of area children and families since 1983.  Each year over 2000 families with children benefit from the agency’s quality education and support programs.  Broadreach has over a quarter of century expertise in delivering parenting education, family support, early childhood education and family literacy programming. Other provided parent education options include Kids First, Guiding Good Choices, and the Nurturing Fathers Program.

If you would like to learn how to register for Active Parenting Now, or learn more about our parent education offerings, please call Patrick Walsh at 207-338-2200 ext 109 or e-mail pwalsh@brmaine.org.

Zero-Sort Recycling Comes to Broadreach

Filed under: Related News — charlie @ 10:24 am

(Belfast, ME) June 1, 2010 – Employees will NOT need to sort, flatten or bundle recyclables! That’s one of the big benefits of Broadreach’s new  “Zero-Sort” recycling program, according to Chip Bradstreet, Financial Director at Broadreach Family & Community Services.

With Zero-Sort recycling, employees can toss all recyclable items together into ONE container, including junk mail, magazines and newspapers, cardboard, paper of any color, aluminum cans, glass and plastic bottles and jars and clean food containers. A few things aren’t recyclable, including food waste, Styrofoam and incandescent light bulbs. The simplicity of one container for all recyclables will reduce the time and effort required by most recycling systems.

A special Zero-Sort dumpster will be located at 5 Stephenson Lane. Details on the program will be distributed to all employees at 5 & 8 Stephenson Lane, the first locations to take part in Zero-Sort recycling.

This program should save money and help the environment. Many of our employees are already recycling at home, and we hope many will be eager to ‘think green’ at work, too.

May 13, 2010

We are thrilled to announce that Broadreach Family & Community Services, in partnership with SAD#3, is offering an Early Childhood Inclusive Education Program (ECIP) for preschool aged children at the Walker School this coming September.  The program‘s operation of hours will be Monday through Friday , 9 to 3 with before and after care available to families needing extended care.  Broadreach offers subsidized tuition to eligible families with support from the Maine Department of Health & Human Services.

Similar to some of our other Broadreach Preschool Sites, this new classroom’s curriculum will be designed to meet the individual developmental and educational goals of the children enrolled.   Our caring, certified, experienced teachers plan the curriculum around the child’s unique needs, interests and strengths.  The classroom will be well-equipped with a variety of educational materials and toys to stimulate and challenge children.  The children will have the opportunity through the planned play activities to develop the skills necessary to enter kindergarten ready to succeed.   The daily storytelling, book sharing, song and movement activities nurture the young child’s language development and his or her first steps toward learning to read.  And as they attend school at the Walker Elementary School during their preschool year, they become familiar with the wonderful Walker School staff, adjust to the routines of the school and adapt to the idea of being in the Walker facility. In addition, they will use the outside play area and the gym. They may even be invited to participate in various reading activities with a ‘reading buddy’ from one of the higher grades. The daily routine encourages each child’s development of self discipline, self esteem and creativity.

The ECIP program at Walker School will offer children and their families:

  • A rich , early educational experience
  • Program licensed by the State of Maine, Department of Health and Human Services
  • Certified Early Childhood educators
  • Nutritious meals and snacks
  • Early language and literacy enriched High Scope curriculum
  • On going screening and assessments to measure the skills children are gaining
  • Indoor and outdoors activities
  • Preschool/ elementary school/parent partnership that supports a seamless transition  to kindergarten
  • Services to children with special learning and developmental needs

Broadreach is a private, non profit agency and has provided high quality services for young children and their families since 1983 in Waldo County.  Don’t miss this amazing opportunity! For more information about enrolling your child into this program, please contact Mary Bailey, Early Childhood Education Programs Director, at mbailey@brmaine.org or 338-2200 ext.304.  Broadreach is very excited about this opportunity to come to the Liberty area and be a part of your child’s early years.

Volunteers from Waldo, Knox and parts of Lincoln Counties have joined together to help raise $50,000 in a campaign to assist Broadreach Family & Community Services with its efforts to meet an increasing demand for social and educational services.  Funds raised in the campaign will be used to support important early childhood and adolescent programs, and to continue critical services for families and individuals that have financial or health challenges.  This campaign, which began in March 2010, will continue through June 2010.

Broadreach provides quality early childhood education and care for area residents, maintains services for children with special needs, operates programs to prevent child abuse and neglect, conducts after-school programs that connect teens to their communities and provides tutoring programs for adults with low-literacy levels. The organization depends on charitable contributions from community members, local businesses and foundations to maintain the services, and to ensure that the basic needs of community residents are met and critical educational support is available to all citizens.

“This year with the economy, job reductions and other life challenges, many people who may not have ever needed services before now are asking for assistance,” said Ruth Southworth, Executive Director of Broadreach. “We are grateful for the contributions that we receive and hope that the people in our communities will respond with their kind support to this campaign.  We are delighted and thankful for the volunteers who are assisting us with this important endeavor.”

Broadreach is a nonprofit organization serving more than 2,500 residents each year. In recent years, Broadreach has ensured the delivery of critical community services by merging with three well-respected nonprofit organizations, Mid-Coast Children’s Services, Youthlinks and Literacy Volunteers of Waldo County. With these mergers, Broadreach has been able to offer services to the growing number of clients.

Broadreach Community Gifts Campaign members include:  Christine Boone, Mary Frenning, Ann Hubbard, Helen Kosmo, Ken McKinley, Scott Story, Gerritt Vander Veer, Mike Towey and Polly Chatfield.

Parents, Guiding Good Choices is For You

Filed under: Prevention Services — charlie @ 1:36 pm

By Broadreach Family & Community Services
Mar 08, 2010 Once again, Broadreach Family & Community Services and RSU 20’s 21st Century Community Learning Center grant program are working together to provide the program Guiding Good Choices to parents of 4th to 8th graders, 9 to 14 year olds. Parents who participate will have a chance to win a $25 gift card and if completing all 5 sessions of the program, a chance to win a $100 gift card to reward them for their participation.

Guiding Good Choices has been presented in many communities across the country and research has demonstrated that participating parents experience improved success in keeping their children drug and alcohol free. The program focuses on building family strengths and reducing risk factors that could make substance abuse by youth more likely. Children whose parents have completed the program have shown a 40% reduction in alcohol and marijuana use; a 54% reduction in the progression to use more serious substances; and a 26% increase in the likelihood that non-users will continue to remain drug free. But to be clear, this is a prevention program and not the best choice for parents whose son or daughter is currently using and in need of treatment.

This free five-session program will be offered at two sites and will meet weekly beginning on March 24th at Searsport District Middle School and on March 30th at Troy Howard Middle School. Sessions will begin at 6 pm and end at 8:15. Childcare and food will be provided. All parents are invited to participate, but preference in registration will be given to families whose children are enrolled in RSU 20.

Grant funds from the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant program and the Maine Children’s Trust make it possible to offer this program at no cost to parents. Sessions will be led by Patrick Walsh a parent educator from Broadreach and Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator for Healthy Waldo County. To register or for more information contact Walsh at Broadreach, 338-2200 ext 109 or by e-mail at pwalsh@brmaine.org.

Outward Bound for Hounds

Filed under: Teens — charlie @ 1:33 pm

Youthlinks/RASA and our very own Caitlin Schick make the front cover of the  March 2010 Down East Dog News.

Run-A-Hound Outing Club is a nine week program in which students from Rockland High volunteer to run with shelter dogs. The program is geared for students who are not involved in sports or fitness routines and provides social/emotional bonding with homeless dogs. Students receive community service credit for their time, a requirement for graduation. Well structured civic coordination and corporate funding is successfully pushing Run-A-Hound towards year-round operation.
Caitlin Schick is the Program Manager at Youthlinks, a division of Broadreach Family & Community Services located in Rockland. Through the Rockland After-School Alliance, she develops opportunities for kids ages 11-17 to do community service and take part in recreational activities. Currently, Schick is directly responsible for operating the Run-AHound program. She meets with the humane society staff during the week to discuss which dogs are available for the run. On the day of the run, she picks up the dogs at the shelter and heads to the school to acquaint everyone. After loading six students and three dogs in the van they head off to the day’s location; she distributes equipment and leads the run.

Youthlinks partnered with Blake Veterinary Hospital in Northport to run this program.  After touring the veterinary facility and asking questions of the office staff, the kids began socializing with Dakota, Kasey and Emma -cats who currently live at Blake Vet as they await adoption. The students made catnip toys for their new four-legged friends and conducted behavioral observations on each cat. Through the observation exercise, they were able to collect information and photos for writing an adoption ad for each cat.  On the last day of the program, the finished adoption advertisements were given to the Blake Vet office staff to post at their office, and some were posted on the Belfast Co-op’s community bulletin board as well. The students hope that their ads will raise awareness about Dakota, Kasey, and Emma, ultimately helping them find homes.  Collaborations such as the one with Blake Vet truly enhance Youthlinks’ programming and provide a wealth of opportunities for students to learn while giving something back to their community. For more information about these cats and other animals available for adoption through Blake Vet, please call 207-789-5700.

In addition to working with Blake Vet, students in the Animal Care Team program spent two weeks volunteering at the Camden Rockport Animal Rescue League. The group also enjoyed a fieldtrip to the Good Karma Farm in Belfast, where they met some alpacas, llamas, and sheep, while also getting a first-hand look at the processes of yarn and soap-making. The Animal Care Team program exists to enhance youth awareness about proper care and treatment of animals, pet overpopulation issues, and to foster a sense of empathy toward animals. This six-week after-school program is just one of many exciting opportunities offered by Youthlinks. Youthlinks is currently running “Global Chefs”, an international cooking class at the Troy Howard Middle School, and will be taking registrations for the spring session in the coming weeks.

Youthlinks is a program of Broadreach Family & Community Services located in Rockland that provides community service, leadership and enrichment opportunities to all youth ages 11-17 from anywhere in mid-coast Maine. These programs help youth learn skills, build self-esteem, cultivate social responsibility, develop leadership abilities and connect to their peers, to adult mentors, and to their communities. Youthlinks is funded primarily by state grants and the generous donations of individuals, businesses, and foundations. All Youthlinks programs are free for participating youth. Kids First Supports Parents, Benefits Kids

Feb 22, 2010 -

For the last 11 years, Broadreach Family & Community Services has been providing a valuable education program called “Kids First” to parents experiencing separation, divorce or child custody conflicts. A one-time, four-hour program held on a Saturday morning provides parents with some valuable information about the effects of adult conflict on their children. Experienced male-female teams who have professional backgrounds in education and mental health counseling, and who have personal experience with family conflict, present the classes.

As one recent participant said in their evaluation at the end of the class, “I think that we will be able to work on our problems and deal with them in a well behaved manner”. Another parent offered “I need to let go. My child in the end is the one who gets hurt the most”.

Most parents come to the program as a result of a strong recommendation or an order from the Court where action related to the family is being discussed. One parent summed up the feeling of many parents, saying “I’m very glad that it was mandatory; I enjoyed the program”. Parents who want to attend voluntarily and who may not have yet filed for divorce or custody, can benefit from the program, have the opportunity to ask questions and to learn from the experience of others.

The Kids First curriculum was developed by the Kids First Center in Portland and Broadreach operates its program through an agreement with them. Each class participant receives a parent handbook that outlines the research and philosophy used in developing the curriculum. Most of that research was conducted by Dr. Judith Wallerstein and colleagues in California who had a long history of providing family counseling in divorce cases. The researchers followed those families periodically over a more than 25 year period and published their findings in installments covering 5 year periods. The most recent book is titled the “Unexpected Legacy of Divorce”, published in 2000.

Some financial support for the program comes from the Family Division of Maine’s Administrative Office of the Courts, and this support makes it possible to offer partial scholarships to parents who qualify as a result of low income.
